Food Handler Certification

In the state of California, all food establishments are required to have at least one certified food manager who has successfully passed an accredited food safety certification exam. The following is a list of all accredited programs available:

Upon completion of any of these programs, you should obtain both your professional food manager certificate as well as your food handler cards. Both of which you’ll need when applying for permits.

Under the Alameda Health Department, tenants for commercial kitchen space generally fall into the following categories listed below. Each category has its own application which is found using the attached links. Please keep in mind that all tenants will need to have a permit prior to starting any operations at the facility.

Temporary Food Facility (TFF) Permits

If you’re planning to sell or give away food at a temporary location, such as a farmer’s market, fair, etc., then you most likely will need a temporary food facility permit. Use the link below to access the permit application:

Mobile Food Facility (MFF) Permits

Processed Food Registration (PFR) Permits

If your food business doesn’t necessarily fall into the categories above, but you still plan to make, process, or distribute food products in the state California, then you’ll want to apply for a Processed Food Registration permit.
